MALTA

With its cultural heritage, scenic landscapes and seascapes, friendly atmosphere and vibrant nightlife, Malta is a favourite destination for many tourists. Many opting to come for its sun and sea, or even for a wonderful holiday on a safe and friendly Mediterranean island. Malta offers something for everyone. Together with Malta University Sports & Leisure, we offer many activities for both individuals and groups. Find out about some of Malta’s major attractions below:

Valletta, the capital of the island, was built by the Knights of St John and is one of the very first planned cities of Europe. The first stone that was laid in 1566 has seen over 450 years of history unfold. Valletta stands on a peninsula and is flanked by two natural harbours, the views of these are quite breathtaking. Many museums, palazzos and churches may be found in Valletta. A visit to St John’s co-cathedral is an absolute must not only for its baroque architecture, tapestries and paintings but mainly for the spectacular Caravaggio painting, The Beheading of St John.

Besides being a historical center, Valletta is also a vibrant business district and is home to many shops, cafes and restaurants.

Mdina, the old capital city of Malta, known as the Silent City is one of the world’s finest examples of a medieval walled city that is still inhabited. Majestically standing on a high plateau, Mdina houses some of the island’s most ancient and fascinating history. Within its walls, one can find churches, monasteries and stately palaces. The cathedral is spectacular and located, along with the museums, in the main square. Allow yourself to wander through the narrow streets and alleys to discover more hidden historical gems.

Gozo is the second largest island of the Maltese archipelago. A visit to this island, offers the traveller an added dimension to their holiday, as Gozo has its own unique character, charm and tranquil atmosphere. Numerous hills, greenery and the abundance of nature can be fully appreciated here.

Recommended as a full-day excursion allows time for visiting the various attractions and activities found in Gozo. These can vary from cultural and sightseeing tours to adventure tours on quad bikes.

The third island in Maltese archipelago, Comino, is a favourite destination for summer day trips. A picturesque island that provided the perfect location for the filming of the Count of Monte Cristo (2002) transforming the island’s fortress into Chateaux d’If.  The crystal clear waters of the island’s most famous spot, the Blue Lagoon are renowned worldwide. A visit to this beautiful island is highly recommended!

The Blue Grotto is one of the most popular and famous attractions in the Southeast of Malta. It is a geographic marvel, a magnificent cave with a naturally formed perfect arch that provides support. From the tiny inlet below the town of Zurrieq, take a trip around the caves in one of Malta’s traditional fishing boats. The caves are best seen in the morning light, with glowing reflections in the water of the multi-coloured coral and minerals embedded in the limestone. In some places, the depth of the water is more than 20 meters yet it seems as though the sea bed is only a few centimeters away. We wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this natural jewel.
