I’m from the EU, can I enter and stay in Malta?

Students with a passport or Schengen VISA issued from any EU country do not need a VISA or any other documentation to enter and stay in Malta. We highly recommend EU students to apply for their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or to obtain an alternative form of Travel/Health Insurance that covers their stay in Malta.

I’m from a country that has a 90-day VISA free stay in Schengen territories. Can I enter and stay in Malta?

Students from the following countries can enter and stay in Malta VISA free for up to 90 days. If a student books a course that is over 90 days, the student will have to apply for the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) when s/he arrives in Malta. Our office gives extensive support to obtain this Permit. More information is below.

Do I need a VISA?

If you are not from a European Union country or one of the countries with a 90-day VISA free stay in Schengen territories, you will need to apply for a VISA. You can apply for a VISA at your nearest Maltese embassy. If you do not have a Maltese embassy in your country, you may apply through an Italian embassy. If a student books a course that is longer than the VISA period granted, the student will have to apply for the Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) when s/he arrives in Malta. Malta University Language School gives extensive support to obtain this Permit. More information is below.

What is the Maltese Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)?

The Temporary Residence Permit is a document issued by the Government of Malta for individuals who are staying in Malta for a specific reason for a specific amount of time and who are not covered by a valid VISA or VISA-free access while in Malta. Once an individual obtains this document s/he is able to stay in Malta and travel in the EU and any Schengen country for the time specified on the Permit. English Language Students can apply for this Permit once they are in Malta and if they have paid their English Course and/or accommodation in full. Please note that students are not able to work in Malta with this permit.

What do I need to prepare for the Maltese Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)?

If you need a Maltese Temporary Residence Permit, Malta University Language School will send you an information booklet with the list of papers and documents that you will need to apply for your TRP. Some of these documents you can prepare before you arrive in Malta. Other documents you can prepare when you arrive in Malta. This information booklet is sent when deposit payment is effected. When in Malta, students are requested to come to our office to set an appointment to apply for their Permit. Our office will also help you make sure you have all the documents to successfully apply.

Will I get my Maltese Temporary Residence Permit if I apply? How long does it take to get the document?

If students prepare all the right documents and follow the guidelines to apply, they will obtain their Maltese Temporary Residence Permit. It can take 8 weeks or more to obtain the TRP. When students submit an application, they will get a Receipt on blue security paper that is an interim residence document pending the issue of the actual permit. This Blue Receipt is not a travel document. Long-term students who need a TRP are strongly advised not to make travel plans before they obtain their Maltese Temporary Residence Permit.
