This year Carnival in Malta will be celebrated from Friday 21st February to Tuesday 25th February. Undoubtedly it is one of the highlights of Malta’s cultural and religious calendar. This celebration literally translates to ‘Meat is allowed’, as what follows after Carnival is a time of preparation for Easter, during which, traditionally, locals refrain from eating meat.

There are lots of things to see and do during Carnival week, but the main attraction has to be the large and brightly coloured floats that dominate the streets of the capital city of Valletta. Here you can see these homemade floats on parade through the streets accompanied by thumping beats.  Street parties along with dress competitions, marching bands, masked balls, dress competitions, and dancers all go hand in hand with Carnival in Malta. Prizes are also awarded to the best float, most grotesque mask, best dancer, and best costume!

At Malta University Language School we have a special offer on our General English courses during Carnival and for the month of February. Should you wish to visit Malta during Carnival and at the same time join one of our courses please click here for further information.
