Malta has a long and colourful history, one which left it with a cultural heritage that has established the Maltese Islands as an open-air museum. Malta’s golden Neolithic period influenced our early architecture in the form of temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Later on, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans and the Byzantines, all left their traces on the Islands.

Malta has also been influenced by the Normans, the Aragonese and the Sovereign Military of St. John of Jerusalem. The latter having the most impact on our culture and heritage. Most notable for the architecture, though even with paintings from Caravaggio, Mattia Preti and Favray.

These varied influences from so many different cultures have transformed present day Malta into an eclectic mix which is bound to appeal to whatever the tourist is in search of. There is so much to see and do, whether one is looking for historical ruins, visiting one of the many churches, or just trying the local cuisine or wine. Malta holds something unique for every different person and one is bound to be pleasantly surprised at the diversity available.

The country’s official languages are Maltese and English, even though there are strong historical ties to the Italian language on the islands. Malta gained independence from Great Britain in 1964 and is a member of the European Union which it joined in 2004, in addition to being part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations. The Euro was introduced in Malta in 2008, making Malta an even more attractive destination for European nationals who also hold the Euro as their currency.

Apart from its rich history Malta is also known for its splendid climate. Having just under 12 hours of sunshine a day in summer, and just over 6 hours of sunshine a day in winter the islands enjoy pleasant sunny weather. The summers are hot, dry and sunny. While winters are mild with occasional rain.

Such a climate offers the possibility of enjoying memorable holidays throughout the year with our wonderful seascapes, landscapes and heritage.
